The Gaze From Above the Plains, Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe, 2025

What a day this was. We had a successful morning birding in Zimbabwe and were finishing up our morning drive when a call came over the radio: another group had spotted a pride of lions.

At the time, we were about thirty minutes away, trying to find Wild Dogs. No luck on this particular day. The coveted golden hour light had already passed, and we would have gone straight back to camp this time of day. But if you want wildlife images, you have to go where the wildlife is. So we happily made the detour.

By the time we arrived, most of the pride had left, except for this lioness and one younger male. There had been three to five jeeps gathered while the pride was there, but once the young male left, the other jeeps did as well.

When I’m on safari, I’m usually in a jeep with just myself and the driver/guide. We decided to stay, thinking we would have the area to ourselves. Stillness invites opportunity.

The lioness walked from the termite mound where she had been resting, right toward the jeep. This alone would have been a win in my book; I had already made what I thought would be my “image of the day.” But as she passed us, she turned toward a nearby tree. To our surprise, she started climbing. Not a word was spoken for what seemed like forever.

This image captured a moment between her calls to the pride. After reviewing the images back at camp, I realized it was only four minutes from the time she started climbing to the moment she was firmly back on the ground.

I’m so grateful I had the opportunity to witness this. I certainly took an unbelievable number of images, but I also put the camera down and just experienced the moment.

Nature is truly amazing.

This image is included in the show as a 30” x 17” Metal print.
